Workshop on Movie Script with ISI was conducted for two days in Jogja at Rumah Tembi Budaya.

Workshop on Movie Script with ISI was conducted for two days in Jogja at Rumah Tembi Budaya. This activity was merged with UDE 2016 batch’s final exam of Screenwriting and Playwriting. The workshop was conducted on the first day at Rumah Tembi Budaya which is on 30th March 2019 from 8.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. With Ibu Dyah and Ibu Endang as the speakers of the workshop, and we got many insights on how to create a good movie script

Ibu Endang explained the six steps on how to create a scenario, from the story ideas, research, guidebook (production design), treatment (synopsis development), scenario, to revision. Ibu Endang explained more details on what we should input in the guidebook. The guidebook itself contains program design, synopsis, characterization, and setting. In the synopsis, there should be plot, motive and conflict, characters, setting and time. After those explanations, she gave us an exercise to make our story’s synopsis which related to our final exam.

Ibu Dyah gave us an explanation about four steps of the dramatic pyramid which are protasis, epnasio, catastasis, and catastrophe. She explained about the guidebook more details as well on the guidebook of the characterization. There are three character dimensions that we need to pay attention to, physiology, sociology, and psychology dimensions. Also, she told us about the types of scene part of the treatment. There is a scene heading, Neben text, and parenthetical. She taught and gave some exercises to us on how to make the scene with Neben text and parenthetical. She gave us some exercises to make a scene with Neben text and parenthetical from what she already provided and from our story.

The second day on 31th March from 10.00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m., we took turns to have a consultation with Ibu Endang and Ibu Dyah about our final exam’s story.

In general, the activity going on very well. On the first day, the students get so much insight on how to write a movie script. The students gained much new knowledge and enjoyed all the activity thoroughly. On the second day for the one-on-one consultation session, it is very much helpful for the students. We got a lot of comments and input on writing our movie script. One thing maybe that can be improved is the time for the consultation. Some inputs, it is better to have a workshop while the students also work on their movie script. So it can have much time in doing their movie script if the students had a revision. Rather than having a consultation session on the second day, it is better to divide the workshop into parts. After the part of the workshop the students can work on their script and have a consultation session with Ibu Endang and Ibu Dyah.  Other than what has mentioned, everything going well and all the students enjoy the activity. It is recommended in the future to have an activity like this again.

Considering what UDE 2016 students experienced in the workshop, it is pretty recommended in the future for this kind activities to behold again. It can inspire the students to make their movie script in the future, and they might become a scriptwriter someday. They also gain more knowledge about writing a scripted movie is not as easy as it seems.
